As much as the portrait of a mother breastfeeding her baby looks adorable and beautiful, it isn’t as easy as it seems. There is more to breastfeeding than just putting your baby in the right position to be breastfed.
There are some helpful tips you can get from different qualified sources and some you gain from experience. There are measures that are required and could be taken. I have listed a few, and I hope you have a nice reading and in-depth understanding.
- Drink more water. To stay hydrated and provide enough water that will produce good breastmilk supply, you’re advised to take about 4 glasses more to your regular intake of water

- The more you breastfeed, the more your breast produces milk. Sometimes you feel your little bundle of joy is not getting breastmilk as desired at first, Do Not Panic. The more the baby sucks, the more there could be a more adequate supply of breastmilk.

- Try as much as possible to stick to breastmilk for the first six months of the baby’s life. A lot of mothers around the world tends to put their babies into the “food test” or to overfeed the baby. Giving the baby all sorts of dishes or water during the first six months of its life is not advisable. Breastmilk contains lots of nutrients as amino acids, antibodies, vitamins and minerals, oligosaccharides, hormones, proteins to mention but a few that are health-wise to the baby.

- A healthy diet is very important. What you eat is what your many eats, be careful and watchful about your diet. Remember “a healthy mother is a healthy baby”.

- Take good care of your nipples. Like I said earlier, despite how adorable a breastfeeding Mother and her baby is, it’s not as easy as it seems, your nipples could hurt. You could apply nipple creams brand products as lanolin, motherlove, medela, earth mama and the likes. Be cautious of what you pick, know what suits you best. Another thing is to avoid over scrubbing or over washing it. Try to apply a damp cloth after feeding as you also need to take care of yourself.
- Do not warm up breastmilk in the microwave. The microwave could make the breastmilk lose it’s vitamins, it is advisable to leave in the a bowl of lukewarm tap water.

- Try to avoid using pacifiers at first. The use of pacifiers cannot be underestimated as it helps in a way or the other, Mummies, please note that it is important to establish breastfeeding before introducing the pacifier. Do not let it become the first step. Try calming or rocking or even playing with the baby.

- Let your baby decide how long it needs to suck. Eating patterns of babies could be difficult to understand at first, as the mother might see this as frustrating. Be patient and give it time. The baby’s stomach is very small and only the baby can understand the way it needs to eat to satisfy itself. Exercise patient and keep learning. Remember, you are a student.

Be at alert and don’t judge with the clock. A good mother needs to understand her baby’s moves. Since children can’t talk they give a few signs as sucking on anything that they lay their hands on or their hands (hungry), their mouth’s movement (hungry), jerking their hands and legs up (playing), sometimes they stick out their tongues (hungry), when hungry don’t hesitate to offer your breastmilk.

Relax especially when your baby is relaxing. Always ensure you get enough rest especially when your little man or lady is fast asleep. As I said a healthy mom is a healthy baby. I know you’ve to cover-up for the rest of the day. But it is advisable to rest for your sake and the baby.

I hope you had a happy reading.
Stay safe and healthy, Mummy and mom-to-be.
